ASPEN, Colo., April 5 (UPI) -- A daredevil snowboarder is dead, apparently after soaring off an out-of-bounds cliff near Aspen Highlands resort in Colorado, authorities said.

Rescuers were unable to resuscitate Wallace Westfeldt, 22, of Aspen after a witness saw him fall Friday, police spokeswoman Renee Rayton said. Aspen Highlands ski authorities arrived at the scene and pronounced the skier dead, Rayton said.

Westfeldt was a competitive snowboarder for 15 years and placed third in the men's North American Snowboard Free Ride competition, a contest in which boarders make their way down a slope by jumping from cliffs, hills and rocks.

He also recently took third place in the Stihl Colorado Free Ride Championships for men's snowboarders.
