BAYTOWN, Texas, April 4 (UPI) -- Police in Baytown, Texas, said Friday they are investigating the death of a newborn baby in a school restroom.

A 14-year-old girl, who police believe had concealed her condition with baggy clothes, gave birth to a boy at Cedar Bayou Junior School on Wednesday. When an ambulance crew arrived, the baby was dead, officials told the Baytown Sun.

Police treated the case as a homicide, but Capt. Roger Clifford, head of investigations, said that was a formality and it does not mean officers think the girl killed her baby. The eighth-grader was hospitalized and had not been questioned at length.

Reports circulated that other students had heard crying from the bathroom. Clifford said the reports had not been fully investigated but it was believed the baby was born alive.

"Nobody realized she was pregnant. She never told the nurse or any of us," said Eleni Maiden, a schoolmate. Maiden said she has known the other girl for nine years.
