Senator's husband admits hiring hooker

LANSING, Mich., April 3 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., says she is having a "very difficult and personal" experience dealing with her husband's admitted hiring of a prostitute.

Stabenow, 57, told the Detroit Free Press Wednesday she was handling the situation with the support of her relatives and colleagues.

"I'm very grateful for the prayers and support I'm receiving," she said.

The senator's husband, Tom Athans, 46, has not been charged after being nabbed in a sting operation by police in February.

He admitted to Troy, Mich., authorities that he solicited a prostitute he met online, a police report said. The report alleges Athans, an executive for a liberal radio show, paid $150 to engage in sex acts with a prostitute at a Residence Inn in Troy.

"No words can fully express how sorry I am. At the time this incident occurred, I took responsibility for my actions and fully cooperated with law enforcement," Athans said in a statement.

Stabenow and Athans have been married since 2003.
