SANTA ANA, Calif., April 2 (UPI) -- A California prisoner who was comatose for a week after officers used a Taser to subdue him has died, officials said.
Jason Jesus Gomez, 35, was taken to the Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Calif., after he stopped breathing when officers at the Intake Release Center used Taser guns to control him last week, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. Gomez reportedly was behind bars for violating his probation.
The Orange County district attorney's office has opened an investigation into the confrontation between Gomez and the officers, the newspaper said.
Officials said the confrontation occurred when officers went into Gomez's cell after he allegedly wounded a nurse who was giving him medication. Gomez reportedly bit an officer and spit at them before they used stun guns to control him.
