China flays Olympic boycott reports

BEIJING, April 2 (UPI) -- China says any official foreign boycotting of the Beijing Olympic Games would only invite humiliation, since the competition belongs to the people of the world.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters foreign dignitaries would come to Beijing to cheer for their own teams and not to flatter China, Xinhua reported.

She was responding to a question on reported remarks by a senior U.S. official about a possible boycott, the report said.

"If any one wants to take the world people's grand event as a stage for political show, he or she has found a wrong place, and will only ask for an insult," Jiang said.

As to the security of the global Olympic torch relay, she said her government is confident of making joint efforts with other government to ensure there is no disruption, which would go against the Olympic charter.

Chinese concerns about the widening Tibetan unrest against Chinese rule of their homeland have increased as the games approach.

The Olympic torch left Beijing Tuesday on its world tour with more pro-Tibetan protests along the way likely, several reports have said.
