Milan beat its rival, the Turkish city of Izmir, by a vote of 86 to 30 following an impassioned presentation promoting Milan's "green" venture, entitled "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life," the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore advocated Milan's petition along with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi in a presentation featuring musical accompaniment by opera singer Andrea Bocelli.

The fight against global hunger and malnutrition by use of sustainable agriculture and global cooperation featured strongly in the Milan proposal.
