Homework load excessive, board told

TORONTO, April 1 (UPI) -- The Toronto Public School Board is being urged to banish homework for kindergarten students and ease off the load for other students.

A board review polled thousands of students, parents and teachers, and the issue will be debated to make amendments later this month so the policies can be in place at the beginning of the next school year in the fall, the Toronto Star reported.

Among the recommendations is that kindergarten students receive no homework, and that homework not be assigned before holidays or weekends, the report said.

The draft banishes the existing policy of 10 minutes of homework per grade, where Grade 3 students get 30 minutes of homework, while Grade 8 allotments are 80 minutes, the newspaper said.

Karen Grose, the board's superintendent of programs said the proposal also recommends primary students cook with their families.

"It involves the family, it involves mathematics, it involves literacy, reading, talking and nutrition," Grose said.
