Turkish court to hear political party case

ANKARA, Turkey, March 31 (UPI) -- Turkey's highest court agreed Monday to hear a case that could lead to the country's governing party being dismantled, officials said.

Government prosecutors claim the Justice and Development party, which has its roots in political Islam, is trying to impose Sharia law in secular Turkey, The Financial Times reported.

The case also involves Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, who are accused of "anti-secular activities," the newspaper reported.

"One thing is clear -- that political uncertainty will prevail in the remainder of the year," said Ozgur Altug, an economist at Raymond James Securities in Istanbul, while economists at ExpresInvest, a brokerage in Istanbul, said Turkey "has entered a period of high political volatility."

Turkey's constitutional court has ordered 26 political parties closed in the past 50 years.
