SAN FRANCISCO, March 31 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Art Institute said it permanently closed an art exhibition after animal rights activists threatened violence against staff members.

The institute received more than 8,000 e-mail messages criticizing "Don't Trust Me" by Paris artist Adel Abdessemed, which opened March 19 and showed video clips of a pig, goat, deer, ox, horse and sheep being beaten to death, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"We've gotten dozens of threatening phone calls that targeted specific staff people with death threats, threats of violence and threats of sexual assaults," Art Institute President Chris Bratton told the newspaper.

Animal rights activists reportedly argue the piece is gratuitous and sends a message that it is acceptable to beat animals to death.

"One of the things this exhibition was pointing to was the difference in production of food resources between industrialized production in the U.S. and in poorer countries," Bratton said to the Chronicle.
