Governor Eliot Spitzer resigns from office at a press conference in New York

NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- Several leading prostitution businesses have said they are going undercover after two major busts allegedly linked to former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

A number of companies have taken down their Web sites to prepare for a major industry crackdown, the New York Post reported Monday.

"I'm being extra cautious -- not advertising and only booking calls for established clients. Business is slowing down and will stay that way until this passes," the operator of a New York brothel told the Post.

New York agencies Maxime Models and Kiki and Colette have taken down their Web sites, the newspaper said.

"I am furious that (law enforcement) is taking such an active interest in our little corner of the world," Melanie, an independent escort wrote on a Web site called The Erotic Review, the Post report said. She said prostitution arrests are "a waste of time and tax dollars."
