SAN DIEGO, March 30 (UPI) -- This weekend's Cesar Chavez Memorial Parade in San Diego put the legacy of the late civil rights activist and labor union leader on display, supporters said.
The Saturday parade helped reinforce the ideals of equal rights Chavez championed prior to his death in 1993, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Sunday.
Among those participating were members of youth groups, unions, cultural groups and government workers.
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers supporter Johnny Simpson told the newspaper Chavez represented the fight to help those who are disadvantaged and struggling to survive.
"He was a great man, standing up for people who had nothing, trying to give them something," Simpson said.
Community leader Genoveva Aguilar said while Chavez made great strides prior to his death, his legacy must live on to eliminate those problems that still exist in society.
"We're still going through the same struggles as Cesar Chavez (did)," she told the Union-Tribune.
