COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, March 26 (UPI) -- A landmine detonated in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, Wednesday, killing two police officers and injuring four others, the military said.

The claymore mine was believed to have been set by the Tamil Tigers rebel organization, the Defense Ministry told Colombo Page.

The military said the attack came one day after 22 rebels were killed in fighting in the Asian nation's northern region. An unknown number of rebel fighters were wounded, the newspaper said.
