Developing storms could spawn flooding

ST. LOUIS, March 25 (UPI) -- A storm system that pushed into the Great Lakes region Tuesday was expected to spread moisture in the Northeast, but not affect flooded U.S. areas.

Storms expected later in the week could aggravate flooding from the Midwest to the Ohio River Basin, AccuWeather.com reported. Rainfall is expected to dump more water into smaller waterways that had begun receding upstream.

The serious work of totaling up flood damage in Missouri and Illinois began Tuesday, when state and federal damage inspectors joined local officials in door-to-door surveys that will lead to federal assistance requests among other things, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said. Missouri is sending teams to 41 counties. Residents of 19 Southern Illinois counties already are eligible for state low-interest loans.

The Missouri Department of Transportation scrubbed and reopened Highway 141 at Interstate 44 Monday.

Meanwhile, air travelers at LaGuardia Airport in New York and Liberty Airport in Newark, N.J., were greeted by delays because of gusting winds, Newsday reported. A traffic management program is in effect at LaGuardia, with flights being delayed destination and arrival.

No delays were reported Tuesday at either Kennedy or Long Island-MacArthur, the New York newspaper said.
