School roof collapses in Quebec

MARIA, Quebec, March 24 (UPI) -- An elementary school in the eastern Gaspe region of Quebec was closed Monday after the roof of its gymnasium collapsed during the weekend, local media said.

About 12 teachers and students were in the gym for taekwondo martial arts classes when they heard a sudden noise and began scrambling, The Gazette newspaper in Montreal reported.

"I heard a noise and I started to run. I was thrown to the ground (by the impact)," said teacher Bruno Babin.

He and one other adult were taken to a hospital, examined and released, the report said.

Local education officials said engineers were investigating but hadn't determined whether the weight of snow was the cause of the collapse.

Late last week the town of 2,500 people had 20 inches of snow fall, followed by freezing rain.

Heavy snowfall throughout the province caused numerous roof collapses in recent days that killed at least four people and the closure of hundreds of buildings.
