Poll: Memphis not harmed by King slaying

MEMPHIS, March 24 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans said Memphis' reputation was not tarnished by the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, a report said Monday.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal said a national survey indicated about 12 percent of the country said the city's reputation suffered as the venue of the killing, while 75 percent said it had not.

The newspaper said many poll responses were made on racial lines, with more than a fifth of African-Americans surveyed saying the city's reputation suffered, while less than a tenth of white respondents said so.

The poll also found that 75 percent of black respondents said King has a "great influence" on daily life in America, compared to 47 percent of white respondents, 63 percent of Hispanics and 39 percent of Asian-Americans.

The survey of 1,012 respondents was conducted in the weeks leading up to the 40th anniversary of his death

in Memphis.
