WELLINGTON, New Zealand, March 24 (UPI) -- At least nine containers of comb honey suspected of containing a potentially lethal toxin remain unaccounted for, authorities in New Zealand said.
The Projen Apiaries comb honey from the Coromandel Peninsula went to market over the last two weeks, The New Zealand Herald reported Monday.
Officials say they believe the honey contains a high level of tutin toxin, which can cause vomiting, seizures, coma and death.
The honey, produced by hobby apiarist Kevin Prout, was withdrawn from store shelves Saturday, the newspaper reported.
Food Safety Authority spokeswoman Trish Pearce said too early in the investigation to know if charges against the beekeeper would be sought, but noted any producer selling unsafe food was liable to prosecution.
