WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- Hillary Clinton's campaign Monday criticized rival Barack Obama's campaign for fighting dirty in the Democratic race for U.S. president.

The Hill reported the Clinton camp lashed out at Obama's campaign for what it called negative campaigning.

In a conference call with reporters, Clinton spokesmen Phil Singer and Howard Wolfson said Obama has broken his promise to end politics as usual.

"It's now clear the Obama campaign has gone off the high road and now clearly holds the low road," Singer said. "It's now clear the Obama campaign is fueled by insults and slander."

They pointed to recent comments by Obama supporter retired Gen. Tony McPeak, who compared former President Bill Clinton to former Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., the newspaper reported.

They said another example is a blog post by Obama supporter and former director of the Iowa Democratic Party Gordon Fischer, in which Fischer mentioned the former president's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

"It is a message designed not to build him up but to tear Senator Clinton down," Wolfson said. "That's not the kind of politics we were promised by Senator Obama."
