Early spring snowstorm socks Midwest

MILWAUKEE, March 21 (UPI) -- An early spring snowstorm roared across the upper Midwest Friday, leaving heavy snow from Minnesota and northern Illinois to western Michigan.

By late afternoon, more than seven inches of snow was on the ground in Milwaukee, about half the 10-15 inches predicted in Wisconsin by the National Weather Service Friday night.

Dozens of flights were canceled at General Mitchell International Airport, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. At least 300 flights were canceled at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, which was socked by mid-winter-like conditions on the second day of spring. About a dozen flights were canceled at Midway Airport, which had more delays.

The storm was expected to dump 8-10 inches of wet, slushy snow in Chicago, with the heaviest accumulations north and northwest of the city, the Chicago Tribune said. At least 9.5 inches of snow had fallen on Gurnee, Ill., near the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

A winter storm watch remained in effect in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where forecasts called for 6-9 inches of snow.
