WWII Jewish ghetto workers share in fund

BERLIN, March 20 (UPI) -- An estimated 50,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors who toiled in forced-labor ghettos in World War II are reported eligible for a one-time compensation payment.

Such workers, who took part in a wide variety of tasks, are being offered about $3,000, USA Today reported Thursday. An estimated 20,000 are said to live in the United States.

German officials said the program was begun to reach those survivors who didn't qualify for a pension because they paid no taxes or for a slave labor fund.
