DANVILLE, Ind., March 20 (UPI) -- Three Indiana gas stations are refunding money to people who purchased gas for prices exceeding $4 a gallon, the state attorney general's office said.
Complaints of gas priced at $4.099 led the office to examine a Marathon station and a Speedway station in Danville and a Marathon station in Avon, WRTV, Indianapolis reported.
Most other nearby stations were pricing their gas at approximately $3.399 a gallon at the time, Attorney General Steve Carter said.
Carter said authorities found that a Danville Speedway employee had accidentally charged diesel prices for unleaded fuel. The other two stations reportedly raised their prices to compete with the increase.
Gas prices were lowered to less than $3.45 a gallon several hours after the Friday mix-up, WRTV said.
Customers affected by the slip-up who can provide proof of their purchase reportedly will be refunded some 70 cents for each gallon they purchased at the increased price.
