Shell to pump it up in Nigeria

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, March 18 (UPI) -- Royal Dutch Shell said it will try to end production shortfalls in its joint operations with the Nigerian government in the oil-rich but volatile Niger Delta.

The Anglo-Dutch company said not only will it finance its share of the improvements but has offered to lend its Nigerian partner the money for its share of the project, The Financial Times reported Monday.

Final plans for the improvement plan were not disclosed.

Shell -- the largest foreign oil company operation in the West African country -- has been plagued by production setbacks in recent years, mostly the result of attacks on its oil installations and pipelines carried out by armed militant groups in the delta.

Nigeria's oil production nationwide has suffered a 20 percent decrease due to the violence in the delta, where about 2 million barrels are produced a day.
