SAN DIEGO, March 18 (UPI) -- A San Diego police officer was placed on administrative leave after allegedly shooting a woman and her son in what may have been an off-duty road-rage incident.

Officer Frank White, 28, was reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation into the weekend incident that left the unidentified woman and her 8-year-old boy hospitalized.

The San Diego Union-Tribune, in its Tuesday editions, said the shooting occurred in the parking lot of an Oceanside shopping center after one car apparently cut off another on state Route 76.

It remained unclear Tuesday who followed who and what exactly prompted White to allegedly fire, the newspaper said. White, who joined the police department in 2005, was off duty and with his wife at the time, the Union-Tribune said.

"There was some type of right-of-way violation by one party or the other," Oceanside police Sgt. Kelan Poorman told the newspaper. "We're waiting to talk to the mother so we can put the pieces of the puzzle together."
