DELRAY BEACH, Fla., March 16 (UPI) -- A car driving the wrong way down a Florida interstate caused a crash Sunday that left three people dead and sent several others to the hospital.
Lt. Tim Frith of the Florida Highway Patrol said the deadly accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Delray Beach. He added that alcohol was suspected to have been a factor, The Palm Beach Post reported.
"There are signs all over the place saying 'wrong way,'" Frith said.
"That should be your first clue. Unless impairment is involved. And we certainly have a suspicion that's going to play a role in this."
Frith told The South Florida Sun-Sentinel an initial collision between two cars led to two other crashes on the interstate and at least seven people were injured. Among the injured was a Delray police officer who reportedly had been chasing the car as it drove the wrong way.
The three fatalities were all in one of the vehicles involved in the initial collision. The dead included an elderly couple from Boca Raton and one of their relatives, police said.
