CHARLESTON, W.Va., March 14 (UPI) -- Federal investigators are investigating the handling of a controversial case by the West Virginia Supreme Court, a report said Friday.
The Charleston (W.Va) Gazette reported Friday that the FBI and investigators from the U.S. attorney's office in Charleston have interviewed employees of the court as well as at least one of the court's five justices, Larry Starcher.
The newspaper reported that investigators are probing the relationship between Chief Justice Elliott "Spike" Maynard and Massey Energy Chief Executive Officer Donald Blankenship.
The two men were reportedly photographed together during July 2006 vacations along the French Riviera and in Monaco, at the same time a verdict against Massey Energy was pending before the court.
Maynard told the newspaper he welcomes an independent investigation of the incident, so he could display his receipts from the vacation he spent with a Supreme Court employee.
