CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 13 (UPI) -- One suspect in a University of North Carolina student's death also was charged Thursday in the death of a Duke University graduate student, police said.

Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr., 17, surrendered peacefully to police Thursday at a home in South Durham, N.C., The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., reported.

Police charged Lovett in the Jan. 18 slaying of Abhijit Mahato and placed him in the Durham County Jail. Lovett is the second person charged with killing Mahato, 29, found shot to death in his apartment. Police previously charged Stephen Oates, 19, with Mahato's slaying.

Charges were filed against Lovett and Demario James Atwater, 21, in the shooting death of University of North Carolina student Eve Carson, whose body was found March 5 in a residential area near the campus. Police arrested Atwater Wednesday and Lovett was at large until Thursday.

The spelling of Lovett's name has varied in police news releases. Chapel Hill police referred to him as Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr.; Durham police referred to him as Lawrence Alvin Lovette.
