MUENSTER, Germany, March 12 (UPI) -- Five German soldiers were sentenced to prison Wednesday after being found guilty of abusing military recruits under their command.
The five received sentences ranging up to 22 months in prison while a sixth man was let off with a fine of $11,500.
The defendants had been tried in Muenster on charges that included abuse, demeaning treatment and causing great bodily harm among the 163 recruits they were training in 2004.
Deutesche Welle said the soldiers beat and administered electric shocks to some recruits.
A total of 18 defendants had been charged. Three were earlier given suspended sentences while charges against the rest were dropped.
