Political detentions on the rise in Cuba

MIAMI, March 12 (UPI) -- Political detentions are on the rise in Cuba, with 200 people being arrested in January, the Cuban Democratic Directorate reported Wednesday in Miami.

In 2007, 350 were imprisoned on the communist island for their political views, according to the directorate's latest report released Wednesday.

Directorate Executive Director Janisset Rivero told United Press International she expected little would change under new Cuban leader Raul Castro, who assumed control of the country in February after his older brother Fidel Castro announced he would not seek re-election.

During February, 50 more people were arrested and detained in Cuba for holding views contrary to the communist regime there.
