Susan Fyfe, operator of the Keno Hills Stable contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after she heard about the gruesome discovery in the town of Andrew, about 65 miles northeast of Edmonton, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
SPCA inspectors toured her ranch on Tuesday and approved her plan, saving the animals from public auction.
Fyfe said she was seeking donations and volunteer help to care for the animals, the CBC said.
Acting on a tip from a neighbor, the ranch in Andrew was raided in late February. The carcasses of 29 horses were found piled up surrounded by massive heaps of manure. In smaller buildings, SPCA provincial field supervisor and peace officer Ken Dean told the Edmonton Journal inspectors also found dead and neglected rabbits, chickens, ducks, goats, and sheep.
The farm is owned by a company called Hinz-Schleuter Arabians but the Journal said calls to the farm weren't answered.
