4 die, 300 hurt in 200-vehicle pile-up

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, March 12 (UPI) -- At least four people died and 300 more were hurt Tuesday when 200 cars, trucks and buses crashed in the fog on a road in the United Arab Emirates, police said.

A government official told ABC News 92 cars burst into flames during the morning rush-hour mayhem on the main road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The wreckage, including a dozen buses that were carrying about 300 workers, blocked the roadway for most of the day as police and rescue workers attended to the victims and removed cars, the Gulf Daily News said.

"I saw lots of ambulances, fire engines and smoke coming out of cars," Jenny Bateman, a British witness, told the Daily News.

"I've never had seen such a terrifying accident in my life," Laxmi Biswas, a highway engineer and apparent eyewitness, wrote on the Khaleej Times Web site.
