Sgt. Richard Fuller of the Wiltshire Police was found dead from a gunshot wound Monday at his cottage near Calne, The Times of London reported. The cottage is a few miles from the country house that Camilla Parker-Bowles purchased after her divorce from her husband and before her marriage to Prince Charles.
The royal couple are on an official tour of the Caribbean on the yacht Leander. They were told Monday of Fuller's death and the prince's office issued a statement that said the duchess was "very saddened" by the news.
While the duchess spends little time at her Wiltshire house, there are facilities there for security, including a guard house.
Fuller, who had been a police officer for 29 years, was close to retirement. Friends described him as an expert marksman and enthusiastic horseman who enjoyed show riding.
He is survived by his wife and three adult children, including a son serving in Iraq.
