BELGRADE, Serbia, March 10 (UPI) -- A proposal to dissolve parliament has been sent to the president of Serbia calling for new parliamentary elections May 11.

The move follows a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica in which the government confirmed its collapse, the Serbian news agency Tanjug reported Monday.

In order for elections to be held May 11, a formal announcement must be made by March 27 to comply with constitutional requirements, the report said.

President Boris Tadic said the government collapse was caused by failure to reach agreement regarding further European Union integration, B92 reports.

He said he still supports Serbia's entrance into the European Union, adding that it will help preserve Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
