Nigeria: Candidate's appeals blocked

March 10, 2008 at 8:48 PM   |   Comments

ABUJA, Nigeria, March 10 (UPI) -- A former candidate for Nigeria's presidency has filed an additional 20 appeals calling for an investigation into last year's election, but to no avail.

The appeals by former military dictator and presidential hopeful Gen. Muhammadu Buhari were once again rejected by Nigeria's electoral authorities, which had already validated last April's election of President Umaru Yar'Adua, The Day newspaper reported Monday.

Buhari and other former candidates contend there was widespread voter fraud and intimidation in the election. At the time, there were numerous reports of violence and vote tampering at many polling stations throughout the troubled West African nation.
