MISSION VIEJO, Calif., March 10 (UPI) -- Sheriff's deputies in Mission Viejo, Calif., shot and killed a man at a shopping mall after he allegedly robbed a jewelry store Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses said the man wore "a very bad wig … like something you'd buy in a costume shop," officials told the Orange County Register. The man, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was killed in a shootout with deputies in the parking structure at The Shops at Mission Viejo.
Acting Orange County Sheriff Jack Anderson said witnesses reported seeing employees in the Fredric H. Rubel jewelry store standing stiffly during the robbery. Witnesses said the man smashed glass display cases to reach jewelry items, and then took two women toward the back of the store, possibly as hostages.
When the man returned to the front of the store and displayed a gun, people starting screaming, the newspaper said.
Anderson said the man started shooting at deputies when they confronted him in the parking structure. No shots were fired in the mall, which the Register said would be open Monday.
