Westminster champ beagle retires early

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- Uno the beagle, this year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show champ, is going out on top, his owners say.

The four owners of the 3-year-old canine, the first beagle to win Best in Show at Westminster, announced Saturday he is retiring while he's No. 1, the New York Daily News reported.

"There's nothing else to top," Uno's handler Aaron Wilkerson said.

If Uno would have added 12 more "Best in Show" ribbons to his collection of 33, he would have been the world's leading beagle champ, the report said.

The beagle's owners said they wanted people to remember Uno as the top Westminster winner at Madison Square Garden.

"Let his legacy be running around the Garden with the crowd giving a deafening roar. It was louder than anything I've heard in 19 years of doing the show. Let people remember Uno that way," said David Frei, host of the Westminster television coverage.
