Water-main break messes up Cleveland

CLEVELAND, March 6 (UPI) -- A major water-main break in downtown Cleveland early Thursday left several buildings without heat when a large piece of concrete fell on a gas main.

Alan Seifullah, a spokesman for the city division of water, said that the break occurred in a 30-inch main dating from the 1880s. He said that all mains leading to the break had been located and shut down.

Jackie Johnson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer she was in Public Square when the pavement went "faloomp."

"Nice to see we finally have a working fountain in downtown Cleveland," one onlooker joked.

Buildings in the area still had water, officials said. Cleveland Community College closed for the day to flush out its system.

The Justice Center and the Marriott and Renaissance hotels had no gas service.
