The Israeli blockage of the Gaza Strip is unacceptable and the British government should condemn it, said the report issued by a coalition that includes Amnesty International, CARE International UK, Christian Aid and Save The Children UK, the Independent Catholic News reported Thursday.
Poverty levels in Gaza are rising and hospitals endure 12-hour power outages a day, while sanitary and water systems are near collapse, the report said. The embargo exacerbated conditions by restricting movement of residents and goods in and out of the area.
"As a result of the blockade and collapse of the economy, there is little money to buy food and limited food to buy," the report said. "Food prices are rising and wheat flour, baby milk and cooking oil are increasingly scarce."
The Israeli Defense Ministry said 90 percent of patients may leave Gaza for treatment and Israel allows medicine and other humanitarian aid through the blockade, IRIN reported. In addition, the ministry said Gaza is supplied electricity and blamed Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, for fuel distribution problems.
