Civilian cybersleuth IDs long-dead man

TORONTO, March 6 (UPI) -- A Canadian civilian used missing persons and unidentified remains Internet sites to identify a man found dead in Toronto 15 years ago, police said.

The unidentified person used the Ontario Provincial Police public site to identify a man found dead in the city in May 1993 as a resident of Niagara Falls, N.Y., the Toronto Sun reported Thursday.

Foul play wasn't suspected in the death but the OPP posted photos on its www.opp.ca unidentified remains Web site, which is a joint venture with the Office of the Chief Coroner, said Sgt. Carole Lafleur of the OPP missing persons unidentified bodies unit.

Lafleur said the sleuth linked pictures of the dead man with a New York state missing persons report and police made contact with next-of-kin who verified the likeness to their missing relative.

Ontario's site has photos of 149 unidentified people, their belongings and artists' renderings of likenesses, the report said.

"We want the public to go and look at our site and see if they can identify anyone," Lafleur told the Sun.
