AUBURN, Ala., March 6 (UPI) -- Police termed the shooting death of an Auburn University freshman a homicide Thursday and sought leads and a suspect.
Lauren Burk, 18, of Marietta, Ga., was found on a street north of campus late Tuesday with a single gunshot wound. She was taken to East Alabama Medical Center where she was declared dead.
Her burning car was found in a campus parking lot, which a school spokesman said was miles away from where she was found, The Birmingham (Ala.) News reported.
Burk was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and a graphic design major. About 80 students, mostly sorority sisters, gathered Wednesday night for a vigil in the parking lot where Burk's car was found.
On a memorial Facebook Internet forum, Burk's friends and acquaintances said she loved to travel, had many friends and was always smiling. "The world was robbed of a beautiful person," wrote one Auburn student.
Alabama Gov. Bob Riley's office offered a $10,000 reward in the case.
