JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 5 (UPI) -- South African women wearing miniskirts marched to a Johannesburg taxi stand where a woman wearing a short skirt had been assaulted by drivers.
The demonstrators called on the government and taxi associations to punish those who removed Nwabisa Ngcukana's clothes, doused her with beer and paraded her naked, The Times of London reported. She was transferring from one taxi to another on a trip from her home in Soweto to her job in a bar when she was assaulted.
Minibus group taxis, a cross between taxis and scheduled buses, are common transportation in many African countries. At Monday's march, women complained of being subjected to sexual harassment when they use the taxis.
Redi Direko, the host of a radio talk show, led the march wearing a miniskirt, orange top with straps and high-heeled shoes.
"While I was growing up, this sort of thing was commonplace. It is time to end all this," she told The Times "Drivers need to be taught how to behave. There is no dress code for women who frequent the taxi rank and we say to the drivers, 'Mind your job.'"
