Tel Aviv mosque vandalized

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 4 (UPI) -- An intruder vandalized a mosque in coastal Israel Tuesday, breaking windows and damaging some of the property, religious officials said.

Someone scaled the fence to the Hassan Bek Mosque in Tel Aviv early Tuesday morning, Ynetnews said.

"He started breaking objects and doors and pulled flowers out their planters. The damage is not very serious but I don't want to think about what would have happened if he would have managed to enter (the mosque)," the mosque's imam, Nawar Daka, said.

Arab Knesset member Jamal Zahalka told Ynetnews the incident marked the fourth time the mosque was vandalized and blamed local police officials for their lack of deterrence.

In 2006, the court in Tel Aviv sentenced a man to nine months in jail for throwing a pig's head wrapped in a kaffiyeh into the mosque's courtyard.
