Canadian snowmobilers survive blizzard

DILLON, Saskatchewan, March 3 (UPI) -- Five Canadian snowmobilers emerged from a weekend blizzard in Saskatchewan relatively unscathed, despite spending a freezing night in the snow.

The snowmobilers were in a group of nine who set out from Buffalo Narrows across Peter Pond Lake Saturday night on a trip home to Dillon, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The storm hit while they were on the frozen lake, producing near-zero visibilities and numbing sub-zero wind chills.

Four riders turned around but the others forged ahead.

Lavina Catarat and a friend got separated from the other three and got stuck in a snow bank. Catarat was able to alert people in Dillon by cell phone, and then she and her companion burrowed in under their machine and waited out the storm.

"We kept shaking each other to stay awake," Catarat said.

At daybreak, they moved to the treeline, where they heard a snowmobile -- but the rider missed them. A second one, however, spotted them.

Two other women were found walking back to Buffalo Narrows and the fifth snowmobiler was found later in the day. He was taken a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the CBC reported.

"It's good they found us when they did," she said. "It's a miracle that they found us."
