Strong winds in the Alps over the weekend apparently triggered an avalanche that knocked the rock loose and sent it rolling across a road near the Soll-area resort of Hotel Gansleit.
The Liverpool Echo said the 48-year-old victim, whose name wasn't released, was heading for Ganselit with his family for an annual ski outing. No one else in the taxi was injured.
Resort staff told the Echo Monday that the Liverpool family was well known around the resort and had visited every winter for the past 15 years.
Austrian authorities said at least four people were killed in the Alpine weather that featured hurricane-force winds.
