NAHA, Japan, March 2 (UPI) -- Japanese prosecutors have dropped charges against a U.S. Marine charged with raping a junior high school student on Okinawa.
Prosecutors said Friday the alleged victim had recanted her story about Staff Sgt. Tyrone Hadnott, Kyodo News Service reported. Hadnott admitted he made the girl kiss him but denied he went any further than that.
"Considering the sentiment of the victim, we decided that it is not appropriate to indict the U.S. military suspect by applying crimes other than rape," Yaichiro Yamashiki, the local prosecutor, said at a news conference.
Hadnott, who had been in jail since his arrest, was released.
