WASHINGTON, March 2 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton claimed a handful of potentially key endorsements Saturday ahead of presidential primaries in Texas and Ohio.

The two best known supporters are actress Melanie Griffith, the Oscar-winning star of "Working Girl," and actress Eva Longoria Parker of "Desperate Housewives." Clinton also gained the backing of El Paso Mayor John Cook and of retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, who served during the administrations of George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Boston Globe reported.

Shelton's endorsement could give a boost to Clinton's effort to convince voters that she is better prepared than her fellow senator, Barack Obama, to lead the country.

"I've been with Sen. Clinton when she has been with our military men and women," Shelton said in a statement. "I know from those experiences that she understands the demands and sacrifice of military life. I am confident she will always put the readiness and well being of our troops first. She is ready to be commander in chief."

Cook's backing could help in Texas, a state Clinton needs to win if she hopes to keep her campaign alive.
