Turks in Germany call for reforms

BERLIN, March 1 (UPI) -- Turks living in Germany are calling on Berlin to change its integration policies, a report Saturday said.

Deustche Welle reported Saturday that the Association of Turkish Communities in Germany has suggested the German government could help the nation's 1.7 million Turks by requiring that 10 percent of public jobs to go to immigrants.

The group also is calling for Turkish lessons and a course called "intercultural life" in German schools.

Kenan Kolat, chairman of the Association of Turkish Communities in Germany, said, among other things, immigrants to Germany should be allowed to vote in municipal elections and retain their original citizenship if they decide to become naturalized in Germany.

Turks make up the largest minority in Germany, with 1.7 million residents, according to 2006 statistics.
