Too many wind farms in Scottish hills?

EDINBURGH, Scotland, March 1 (UPI) -- Environmentalists say the hills in southern Scotland that inspired many of the novels of Sir Walter Scott could be ruined by wind farms.

The Lammermuir Hills are already home to three small wind farms. Five more have been authorized and two are under consideration, The Scotsman reports.

Most of those fighting the wind farms have no objections to that form of energy. But they say planners should be more careful about where turbines are located.

"The Lammermuirs have hidden delights," said Alistair Cant of the Scottish Wild Land Group. "If we get the whole lot covered by four, five, six wind farms, we are losing the character of these places. One does wonder why they can't site wind farms away from these hills -- in forestry land, for example."

Richard Havers, a local writer, has recruited at least one celebrity -- former Rolling Stone bassist Bill Wyman. The two men are old friends and have written books together.

Wyman came to visit and became so angry about one proposed wind farm that he registered an online objection to it.
