SAN FRANCISCO, March 1 (UPI) -- A man was arrested and cited for misdemeanor animal taunting after he allegedly threw acorns at a San Francisco Zoo rhinoceros, a report said.
Juan Zuluaga, 26, was arrested after another patron at the zoo called a hot line to report him for taunting the black rhino, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.
"He tried whistling at (the animal), then grabbed a branch and took acorns off it. He's an adult. He should know better," zoo spokeswoman Lora LaMarca said of Thursday's incident.
San Francisco Zoo officials reportedly have taken animal taunting more seriously since a man died and two were injured when a tiger escaped its cage and attacked them Christmas Day last year. One of the three individuals involved in the attack said they were yelling and waving at the tiger before it attacked, the newspaper said.
