TORONTO, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Toronto Animal Services officials confirmed Friday a dog authorities claim was a pit bull that bit a man was euthanized, the Toronto Star reported.

The 4-year-old male dog, named Munchie, escaped from a downtown yard last September and allegedly attacked a neighbor. The animal was held in quarantine while his owners contested claims the dog was a pit bull.

In August 2005, Ontario banned the sale and breeding of pit bulls and clamped restrictions on those already in the province.

The dog's owners had argued Munchie was a mutt, mostly a chocolate lab, but Animal Services disagreed, and a court backed the agency's ruling, the Star said.

The dog's co-owners, Sheila Yeung and Angela Feng, said they spent more than $15,000 fighting for the dog's life. They didn't appeal the court's decision.

The neighbor the dog attacked is facing charges for uttering threats against the dog and its owners before the September incident, the report said.
