WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Tax rebate checks -- the centerpiece of an emergency economic stimulus package -- will be mailed in early May, U.S. President George Bush said Thursday.

"We're optimistic about the long-term economic future of the country, but right now a lot of Americans are facing uncertain times," Bush said after meeting with his economic advisers. "And we're acting on it."

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said the department anticipated check mailings would begin in the second week of May. The department has mailed letters outlining how individuals qualify for the checks, he said.

The bipartisan stimulus package is a good start, Bush said. Congress should make temporary tax cuts permanent if members really want to make a "substantial difference" in creating certainty in uncertain economic times, he said.

Turning to housing, Bush said the government "want(s) people being able to stay in their homes."

He said the administration offers a multi-department approach designed to help people stay in their homes, responsibly refinance mortgages and help consumers "make the financial adjustments necessary to help us through this difficult period of time."

"We don't support legislation that will reward lenders," Bush said, alluding to a housing package introduced by Senate Democrats.
