NEW YORK, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The deaths of three New York children allegedly drowned by their mother has Nassau County officials admitting child welfare workers made a series of mistakes.
County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi says a night-shift supervisor for the county's Child Protective Services has been suspended for not adequately following up on a complaint against Leatrice Brewer, 27, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
The Long Island mother called police last Sunday to say she had killed her daughter Jewell Ward, 6, and sons Michael Demesyeux, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux, 18 months.
Just two days earlier, Suozzi says a complaint was made against Brewer but a supervisor who has worked at the agency for 19 years failed to send a caseworker to follow up on it.
Suozzi indicated the supervisor's suspension could be the first of a number of disciplinary moves officials take as they attempt to piece together what is being described as a string of breakdowns.
Brewer has pleaded innocent to charges relating to the children's deaths.
